Effect Strengths and Rarity

Post by Bell »

Since it is impossible to apply rules that balance cards by their rarity to an online Card game, the effects of cards in Chaos Fractal will tend to be weaker than most, with nothing particularly standing out until the creatures reach very high costs. Even then, due to cost reduction, and the nature of acceleration, you will often find that cards need to be used tactically moreso than simply achieving dominance by getting them into play.

Most cards will give pure advantage only under specific situations, and generally therefore will be less likely to be outright better than others, though it is almost a sure thing that the playerbase as a whole will decide that some cards are less useful overall. We are currently aiming to have far fewer 'objectively superior' cards or strategies. The hope is to increase and maintain overall playability of all cards in this way, since variety is a function of having less obsolete cards to weed out in the first place.

For this reason, expect to experience a situation where choosing the best cards for a deck is quite difficult to do on a straight 'this card is better' level, since knowing what you are aiming to do will be the strongly deciding factor in your ability to improve your deck's abilities.

Also, expect that when you suggest a card, that some sort of effect that makes it more tactical in its use will be added. Our original plans included mostly forcing the player to Consume tempo for effects that get tedious when reused, but so far it has turned out such that we didn't end up making that many very powerful effects in the first place, so this has been a lot less required than expected.

Currently we are focusing on making cards do more different things that help rather than using basic, high dominance effects to make cards attractive.

When suggesting cards, you don't need to offer the balancing half yourself unless you really want to.

We are currently avoiding making effects Race or Element specific since all that does is make powerful cards that can only be used in one decktype. Unfortunately in an online card game, the effect of this is simply making that decktype dominant, so we will have to avoid this in general.

<ri> you don't have access to defool.exe?
<Wedjat> It would be an illegal operation.
